MTV's 2009 milestone list
So, apparently this is a list of "five cultural moments that the class of '09 will take forward with them into the future." (MTV.com) Now, I'm not very sure how many 17-18 year old kids work with the network but my thought is that there aren't very many.
The list consists of:
5. Gay marriage
4. Twitter
3. Twilight
2. Lady Gaga
1. President Obama
Gay marriage. This is not something new. The issue of gay marriage has been out and about for ages so the fact that it is on this list is pretty lame. Out of everything that we have been through during the past twelve years, nobody can come up with anything more important than gay marriage? Let me be clear here: I am not saying that gay marriage is not important; I am saying that gay marriage is perhaps not as important as some of the other issues (including foreclosures, North Korea's missile threats, and everything else going on at the moment) and unless someone makes it legal to be married to the same sex, I don't think that this is a milestone of anything.
Twitter. I, honestly, do not know anyone who uses or has even looked at twitter so I don't really think that it is that important. It is a fad just like myspace and facebook and in a year it will be gone from everyone's list of favorite sites.
Twilight. I'm not sure why this movie is a "milestone". Actually, I'm not even sure why it was that big of a hit. It didn't have any groundbreaking special effects, or a groundbreaking storyline. I have to attribute its success to the teenage hormones of girls who can find nothing else to do but to get off at the fact that Edward Cullen has fangs and can penetrate(:o) the skin of Bella Swan. Fascinatingly erotic, I am sure.
Lady Gaga. I do have to admit that Lady Gaga is pretty good. However, are we really that shallow-minded that we can't even think of anything else but artists?
President Obama. Yes, I do have to admit that getting a new president is a big milestone in pop culture. However, if it would have been someone else like perhaps Al Gore or the likes, the president would not even be on this list.
As a 2009 graduate I can say that this list in a way, insults me.
